Indian Railways to Double Train Capacity in 48 Cities by 2030

New Delhi | Prime Headlines:
Indian Railways has announced a major expansion plan to double train-originating capacity in 48 major cities across India by 2030, aiming to reduce congestion and improve passenger convenience.
As part of this plan, five key cities from Bihar have been included: Patna, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, and Gaya. These cities are important rail hubs and handle heavy passenger traffic every day.
What Will Be Upgraded
The expansion will focus on strengthening railway infrastructure in and around major cities. Key upgrades include:
Construction of new platforms at busy stations
Development of new urban terminals to reduce pressure on main stations
Additional stabling lines and maintenance facilities for trains
Improved signaling systems for safer and faster operations
Multitracking of railway lines to allow more trains to run simultaneously
Why It Matters
With rising population and growing demand for rail travel, many cities face overcrowded stations and delays. By increasing train-originating capacity, Indian Railways aims to ensure more trains start and end in major cities, improving punctuality and passenger flow.
For Bihar, this move is expected to boost connectivity, support economic activity, and make long-distance and regional travel more efficient.
Indian Railways said the plan is part of its long-term vision to modernize infrastructure and meet future travel demand by the end of this decade.
