Massive Bulldozer Action at Chandola Lake Targets Illegal Settlements in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, April 30, 2025 — In a significant crackdown, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has initiated a large-scale demolition drive at Chandola Lake, targeting illegal settlements allegedly inhabited by Bangladeshi immigrants. The operation, involving over 2,000 police personnel, 50 bulldozers, and 50 dumpers, aims to reclaim land encroached upon over the years.
The AMC’s action follows a comprehensive investigation revealing that unauthorized occupants had filled parts of Chandola Lake with waste from the nearby Pirana dumping site, subsequently constructing makeshift homes. This encroachment not only disrupted the lake’s ecosystem but also blocked the Narmada pipeline, a crucial water source for the lake.

Authorities discovered that many of the settlers possessed forged identification documents, including Aadhaar and PAN cards, some allegedly bearing the signatures of local officials. These documents enabled them to access various government welfare schemes.
The police have detained 48 individuals, including women and minors, from areas around Chandola Lake. Investigations revealed that some women were coerced into prostitution, and funds were being funneled back to Bangladesh through illegal channels.
Satellite imagery comparisons from 1985, 2011, and 2024 indicate a significant reduction in the lake’s area due to encroachments. The AMC plans to continue the demolition drive to restore the lake’s original expanse and prevent further illegal settlements.
Residents and activists have raised concerns about the humanitarian implications of the demolitions, urging the authorities to ensure due process and provide assistance to those displaced. The AMC has stated that legal procedures are being followed and that efforts are underway to identify and deport illegal immigrants in coordination with central agencies.
The situation at Chandola Lake underscores the challenges urban areas face in balancing development, environmental conservation, and immigration control. As the AMC moves forward with its plans, the focus remains on restoring the lake while addressing the complex socio-political issues intertwined with the encroachments.
