India Sees Gradual Rise in COVID-19 Cases Amid New Variant Surge

India has reported a steady rise in COVID-19 cases, with active infections crossing 3,000 as of May 31, 2025. The increase is linked to emerging Omicron subvariants such as JN.1, NB.1.8.1, and LF.7, now under close watch by health authorities.

Kerala leads with 430 active cases, followed by Maharashtra (209), Delhi (104), Gujarat (83), and Tamil Nadu (69). New cases have also surfaced in Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Haryana.

The JN.1 variant—known for its higher transmissibility—has shown mild but unique symptoms. NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 have been detected in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, respectively.

Health officials advise wearing masks, maintaining hygiene, and getting booster shots. Most infections remain mild, but authorities are enhancing surveillance and monitoring, including wastewater testing, to control the spread.

Vaccination and basic precautions remain key as India navigates this latest COVID-19 wave.
