Siwan/Chapra, Bihar – At least 24 people have lost their lives due to the consumption of spurious liquor in Bihar’s Siwan and Chapra districts. The incident, which has shaken the state, saw 20 fatalities in Siwan and four in Chapra. Several others are reported to be in critical condition, raising concerns about illegal liquor distribution despite the state’s prohibition policy.
The Bihar government has taken swift action, suspending negligent police officials and forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. So far, three individuals have been arrested, and an FIR has been lodged against eight suspects. The government faces criticism from opposition parties, accusing it of failing to enforce the prohibition law and alleging collusion with liquor mafias.
Bihar has a strict prohibition law in place since 2016, but tragedies related to illicit liquor continue to surface, raising questions about its effectiveness. Officials have promised strict action against those responsible, and further arrests are expected as the investigation unfolds.
This incident reignites the debate over the enforcement of prohibition laws, with opposition leaders demanding accountability and highlighting the persistence of black-market alcohol sales. The government assures that the SIT will uncover the source of the liquor and ensure justice for the victims.
