Pakistan Appoints Asim Munir as First Chief of Defence Forces (CDF)

Islamabad, December 5, 2025 | Prime Headlines:
President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the summary sent by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, officially appointing General Asim Munir, the current Chief of Army Staff (COAS), as Pakistan’s first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).
The new position of CDF has been created to serve as the top military leadership role, overseeing the Army, Navy, and Air Force — similar to the Chief of Defence Staff model used in several other countries.
With this appointment, General Munir becomes the most senior military officer in Pakistan’s history, responsible for ensuring coordination between the three branches of the armed forces and advising the government on national security and defense strategy.
Sources in the Prime Minister’s Office said the move is part of broader reforms aimed at improving joint military planning and strategic coordination among the services.
The summary for Munir’s appointment was reportedly fast-tracked after approval from the Defence Ministry, reflecting the government’s desire for continuity and stability amid rising regional tensions and internal security challenges.
General Asim Munir, who took charge as Army Chief in November 2022, has been known for his focus on counterterrorism, modernization, and regional security cooperation.
