Lawyer Throws Shoe at Chief Justice BR Gavai in Supreme Court Over Remarks on Hinduism

New Delhi: A dramatic scene unfolded inside the Supreme Court on Monday when a lawyer hurled a shoe at Chief Justice BR Gavai, reportedly in protest against remarks made about Hinduism. The incident, which occurred during a court proceeding in Delhi, has been widely condemned as a serious act of misconduct and a breach of security within the country’s top judicial institution.

The lawyer, identified as Rakesh Kishore, allegedly shouted slogans defending Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism) moments before throwing the shoe toward the bench. Eyewitnesses told the BBC that the shoe “brushed against the Chief Justice and another Justice before falling behind them.”

Security personnel immediately intervened and escorted Kishore out of the courtroom as he continued to shout, “India won’t tolerate insult to Sanatan Dharma.” The incident briefly disrupted proceedings but no injuries were reported.

Following the disturbance, Kishore was suspended from legal practice pending further disciplinary action. Legal bodies and senior advocates have condemned the act, calling it “an insult to the judiciary and the sanctity of the courtroom.”

Throwing a shoe is considered one of the gravest public insults in India. The unprecedented act inside the Supreme Court has raised serious concerns about courtroom security and professional ethics within the legal fraternity.

While the Supreme Court has yet to release an official statement, sources suggest that an internal review of security protocols may be initiated to prevent similar breaches.

The incident has sparked widespread debate across social media platforms — with some users supporting Kishore’s sentiments but denouncing his method, and others emphasizing that personal beliefs should never override judicial decorum.

The shocking outburst has once again highlighted the growing sensitivity around religious discourse in India and its impact on public institutions.
