Iran Confirms Death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei After U.S.–Israeli Strikes

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has died, Iranian state media and government sources confirmed following a major military operation carried out by the United States and Israel over the weekend. The announcement was broadcast on national television early Sunday, marking a dramatic escalation in Middle Eastern tensions.

Khamenei, 86, who had been Iran’s highest authority since 1989, was reportedly killed on February 28, according to state announcements. The confirmation follows earlier statements by U.S. and Israeli officials claiming he had been targeted and killed in coordinated air and missile strikes.

Iran’s government has declared a 40-day period of national mourning, describing Khamenei’s death as a form of “martyrdom” and praising his decades of leadership. His passing leaves a power vacuum in Tehran, with no clear successor yet named, and raises questions about the future direction of Iran’s political and military strategy.

Reports also indicate that members of Khamenei’s inner circle and family were killed in the attack, though details remain incomplete. The strikes have already triggered broader regional responses, including retaliatory missile launches and heightened security alerts among neighboring countries.

This development, confirmed by Iranian state media, signifies one of the most consequential shifts in Middle East geopolitics in recent decades and comes amid intense and ongoing conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel.
