PrimeHeadlines.com | June 6, 2025 — India is witnessing a concerning surge in COVID-19 cases once again, prompting health authorities to declare a public emergency. With 4,866 new active cases reported in just 24 hours and 7 fresh fatalities, officials are urging citizens to remain alert.
The national capital, Delhi, recorded 105 cases on Tuesday, but it’s Kerala that is leading the current wave with 1,487 infections. Other severely affected states include:
West Bengal – 538 cases
Maharashtra – 526 cases
Gujarat – 508 cases
Karnataka – 436 cases
Although the central government has not yet enforced lockdowns or containment zones, the Ministry of Health is on high alert and is coordinating closely with state-level agencies. Hospitals have been advised to remain prepared for a potential surge in admissions, and genome sequencing of samples is underway to monitor for any new variants.
The current rise is being attributed to JN.1 subvariant activity, which has shown signs of rapid transmission, though severity appears moderate for now.
Public health experts are advising people—especially the elderly and immunocompromised—to wear masks in crowded places, avoid unnecessary travel, and get booster vaccinations if eligible.
As India once again navigates uncertain COVID waters, the emphasis is on early detection, medical readiness, and public caution.
